Selective Coordination generally describes the design of an electrical system in which the protective device (fuse, circuit breaker or relay) nearest to the system fault clears the fault without affecting the protective devices that are upstream from it. This standard is defined in IEEE-242 (Buff Book)IEEE Recommended Practice for Protection and Coordination of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems. The principles of system protection and the proper selection, application, and coordination of components that may be required to protect industrial and commercial power systems against abnormalities that could reasonably be expected to occur in the course of system operation are presented in a in a simple, yet comprehensive, format. The principles presented apply to both new electrical system design and to the changing, upgrading, or expansion of an existing electrical distribution system.

 

An Arc Flash is an electrical explosion due to a fault condition or short circuit when either a phase to ground or phase to phase conductor is connected and current flows through the air. Arc flashes cause electrical equipment to explode, resulting in injury or death to workers and destruction of electrical equipment. The standards are defined in IEEE-1584 And NFPA-70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. NFPA-70E also requires Arc Flash studies updated when a major modification or renovation takes place. It shall be reviewed periodically, at intervals not to exceed 5 years, to account for changes in the electrical distribution system that could affect the results of the arc flash risk assessment.

 

Equipment Evaluation compares distribution equipment ratings to the results of the short circuit study to determine if the distribution equipment ratings. It also compares available fault duty X/R ratios are at or below rated equipment X/R ratios the short circuit study.
